The Waldorf Astoria is based on a stately 20th-century French fireplace in the Louis XVI style, modelled after an antique mantelpiece found in New York’s celebrated Waldorf Astoria Hotel during the 1930s. A moulded shelf crowns the inset-panelled frieze, while delicate rosette paterae and scrolled, fluted jambs complete the neoclassical design.
